My roommate, Adam forwarded this

My roommate, Adam forwarded this article to me. Who'd have thought Brian Eno would be a damn decent writer in addition to an amazing musician. Be sure to read the American view for a bit of stifling stuffiness.

The articles were not published in the US edition of Time:
"The American edition of Time will not be running this piece, as apparently they think that even the mildest criticism from their warmest friends will be too much for a U.S. audience to handle - B. Eno"

Well it ain't that bad

Well it ain't that bad up here in Rochacha. Cold but nothing compared to the weather up in Mt. Tremblant snowboarding a few years ago.

Check out this article about my stepdad and his work with the orphanages in Cali, Columbia. It's pretty poorly written and seems to nullify my brother and I's existence but cool nonetheless.

Hey for all you reversions

Hey for all you reversions addicts out there, it's back up after a hiatus induced by some goings on at register.com.

I got my powerbook back early Tuesday morning having sent it out Friday afternoon to Texas no less. Under 2 business day return time - that's not too shabby. In other geek news, Kasima sold me his PowerMate. The great thing about it is that it doesn't really do anything, it just looks cool.

Heading up to glorious Rochester today. They say it's -25 with wind chill. Ho ho ho, should be a barrel of laughs. Here's to hoping that condensation doesn't freeze on the plane's wings and I die a fiery death on an icy day. How's that for tempting fate!?

I am experiencing technical dificulties

I am experiencing technical dificulties

I've been wanting to build a "media pc" for living room playing of mp3s, divx movies, dvds, and recorded TV. So I bought a Radeon 7500 to test it out. Not a bad card, and there's some decent software out there like MythTV and Media Box. But to be honest none of them that great in terms of comleteness and ease of use. So then TiVo announced that they're planning on releasing software to play mp3's over a network and that they are were selling refurbished 60-hour TiVos for $150 after a $50 rebate. That's a pretty good deal so I ordered one.

Two days later I get the thing - pretty fast. I start setting it up and am immediately impressed with just the setup screens - easy to follow instructions and a nice looking GUI. But no sooner do I get 10 minutes into the setup, and the thing crashes and basically won't reboot correctly. So back it goes today with a new one on its way soon I hope.

I also sent my beloved PowerBook back to Apple day after a month of problems and an apparently spectacular final crash (according to roommates Adam and Sam) including terrifying noises being emitted from the speakers.

So I am without toys and my woman and Mike Elliott is going to Amsterdam tonite that sonofabitch. That's okay though, big party tonite at IHOP with 1337 - $3.99 all you can eat pancakes. Oh baby!

A Belated Happy New Year

A Belated Happy New Year

I'm eating lunch on my first day back at work after a couple weeks off, so this is probably as good a time as any for an update.

Christmas in Pittsburgh and New Years in Northhampton, MA were both good to me. I got a drill and a knife and some gloves for Christmas - more on that later. Best of all I got some snowboarding in over New Years in MA and VT with Arielle, Adam, and Anya. Not the best of conditions, but a grand time was had by all regardless. And, indeed, who knows the next time I'll be on a slope again. I managed to give myself a decent injury on the slopes - thankfully on the last run of the day. Coming of a smallish jump a 360 was attempted... full rotation was achieved, alas I had also rotated such that I was perfectly horizontal about 6' off the ground, so I came down on a combination of my left buttock and my left hand thereby jamming my left clavicle into its socket. No worries as I've a hearty prescription of Naproxin and it's healing as fast as a soon-to-be-26-year-old can manage.

Saturday evening brought with it a joint birthday party for Suzie, a friend of Arielle's, and I. Prior to the party we made some mussels for which chopped parsely is delicious. As I chopped happily away with the sparkling new knife I'd received for Christmas I noted the exquisite edge and the ease with which I was chopping. That is until I realized that I had sliced, with ease mind you, into a sizable portion of my index finger. Said knife went in at an acute angle to the nail of my left index finger and cut damn near to the tip of my finger. Thankfully it was a clean cut, so the pain was bearable. A bit gushy but some iodine and ad hoc bandages took care of that.

In the shower, I had the great idea that since since I'd be losing most of the nail on my index finger, I'd like to document this and as such I will be snapping a picture of it every day for the next 3 or 4 months until the nail is comletely replenished. Here's to hoping that my foray into time-lapse photography is a succesful one.
