I've discontinued any development on apron as there are several implementations of full-fledged video players that output ascii using aalib, the best of which is probably MPlayer (screenshot). These will probably serve your purposes better if you're looking for an ascii video player.
apron is an ASCII MPEG video player based on aalib and libmpeg3. It's in the very early stages of development, but you should be able play an MPEG Layer 1 video (w/o sound currently). apron presently drops frames by default to keep to a decent framerate - not ideal, but I'm working on that one as you read (time permitting of course =).
If you manage to build it succesfully elsewhere, please let me know.
